~Your Character~

Joshua "Riley" Kirkland ❖ Finished Ff5s3p

Name: Joshua "Riley" Kirkland,
Age: 23
Birthday: September 26th
Country of Origin: Akaroa, New Zealand
Floor in the building: 1st floor
How long they've lived in the building: Around a year and two months.
Job: Geophysicist
Powers: Manipulation of Magnetism and Dowsing ability.

Appearance:
A blonde, 5' 9" Kiwi, aka New Zealander. He isn't bothered at all about his appearance, evident by looking at his honey blonde hair. It's not hard to spot the two awkward curls on either side of his head, untameable by any brush or comb. His eyebrows are larger than your average person, although they aren't big enough for him to care enough to do anything about them; his bright eyes usually diverge the attention away from them anyway. Thanks to these, he can easily pretend to look interested and enthralled by ones conversation even if he cannot find the energy to care at all. His features are all framed with a rounded, gentle face which matches his personality to a T. Although he is slightly chubby, it's usually hidden by his shirt; he doesn't let it get to him, which explains the amount of junk food in his cupboards.

Whilst at the apartments, he can usually be found a casual shirt. Whilst wearing shirts, he always has a crazy knitted jumper on top, just like the Christmas jumpers people receive and never want to wear. Joshua has well over 30 of these jumpers and the more of an eye-sore they are, the more he seems to like them. He claims they're cheerful and brighten peoples day, but they don't make eyes very happy. If one were to rummage through his wardrobe, they'd also come across a few Royal Navy uniforms that he seems to have come across. Why? No-one knows. He never wears them and they sit and gather dust.

He wears shorts all year around, claiming he can take the cold and that wearing shorts makes him feel young. Odd.

Personality:

If someone has a dislike for the seemingly always cheerful kind of guy, they'd best stay clear of Joshua. He usually has some sort of silly grin on his face, with a saying of his being, "if you smile, people will always be happy and smile back." As he's recently discovered with some of the people living in the apartment, this doesn't quite apply, but he keeps on trying either way. Although he likes people to be happy, he doesn't really like to go out of his way to help them out unless they've helped him out before. He's quite a lazy man, probably thanks to his desk job that he barely has to attend to. This laziness is evidenced by a quick glance into his room; the floor has long disappeared amongst a sea of clothes, books and CDs and the things usually flying around him, if they also count as rubbish.

Joshua has a very bad habit of borrowing things, but it turns into more of a permanent borrow. This usually gets him in the lenders bad books as he rarely ever remembers to return things, even after prompted a few times. He has the idea in his head that everyone is just as laid back as him deep down inside and thus tends not to cater to everyone's personalities. It's quite easy to think that he is annoying and ignorant but deep down he really is sincere and just thinks that everyone is happy. This could perhaps even be one of his weaknesses, getting him in trouble with those who aren't quite as happy as he'd make out.

The New Zealander is quite smart if he can put the effort in to try but this is something he doesn't often do. He certainly lacks in the common sense department but this is covered by his extensive academic knowledge; he loves to bore people with his 'useless rock talk', but isn't particularly good at listening to the things other people like to talk about but despite this, he does at least try to act interested. He's rarely ever angered either, so trying to annoy him or bug him will usually end up as a failure as he'll just see it as a joke. But then, he usually sees most things as a joke.

Likes:

✖ Sheep. He owned one back home but had to leave her there. Now he's working on a plan to get her into the apartment.
✖ The great outdoors. Back home in New Zealand, he'd love to go adventuring, even into his teens. Now though, he can barely get out of this concrete jungle.
✖ Photography. He wouldn't admit to being any good at it though, but he needed something to take his mind off of the busy city in which he's been stuck for the last year. He thought about joining a photography society but lost interest in taking pictures of the same boring city over and over, so he sticks to abstract old film photography. Currently his room is covered in washing lines holding up developing prints. His waste bin is also overflowing with unwanted prints, still waiting to be taken out.
✖ Relaxing. Most of the time, Joshua can be found in his apartment "chilling out", listening to music and just generally leaving all of his troubles and worries at the door. This is a bad thing however, as everything inside is a mess but he claims he must have his relaxation time and doesn't have any time for cleaning.
✖ Rugby. He loves watching it on TV, sitting with a beer in his All Blacks shirt. Sadly does his own little version of the Haka if he thinks no-one is watching him, until the day that someone walks in and catches him doing it...
✖ Jokes. There's nothing like a good joke, is something he'll often say. He's usually left laughing at his own jokes though, when other people don't get them.
✖ Loud music. Anything to drown out things that might cause him trouble.

Dislikes:

✖ Spiders. A common fear, but as people living on the same floor as him will get to know, he can scream like a girl if he spots one. Recently he invested in a shoe near to the door, just in case...
✖ People who like talking about their families a lot. He doesn't have any left, so he's kind of jealous. He'll endure it though, so long as they don't ask him about his own.
✖ Awkward conversations, especially when introducing himself. He thinks people find his interests boring after previous experience, so doesn't really try too hard. He does find other people instantly interesting though; he's a little nosey.
✖ Computers. Him and them never really got along. If he has to use one, he'll usually seek out the help of someone else and that's only if he hasn't turned it off and given up with it.
✖ Sitting in his office all day. He doesn't have to work much, but sitting at his office drawing out maps isn't exactly what he signed up for when he got the job. He's still waiting for the travelling he was promised.
✖ Children. He'll try and bare them, but just one glance at him when one is near shows how much he loves them.

Any other information:
Takes up the name Riley because he believe it sounds more happy than Joshua. People are free to call him what they wish though, but he might not appreciate being called by his given name.

History:

Born the son of a boat driver in the village of Akaroa, in the Southern Island of New Zealand, Joshua grew up without much contact with others his own age. Instead, he lived with his father along the coast of the peaceful settlement, helping him out with his tourist business taking people along the Akaroa harbour. It was a quiet life and the formation for his carefree personality that he still holds, despite having left Akaroa when he was 18. Before he left, his dad too ill and the little money they had to look after themselves started to dwindle and a terrifying rate, forcing Joshua to take up his father’s job and take the boat out. This earned him the nickname of “Riley” from the many tourists that repeatedly came back to the village to ride the boats. Riley, being the name of his father, was a name he usually introduced himself as thereafter.

Aside from his work on the boat, in his spare time he would venture out into the countryside and learn more about the rocks and formations that made up his homeland. Sometimes he’d take rocks and fossils he’d find back home and store them in his room which quickly became full . For hours he’d read books about people who studied the Earth and worked to help themselves and others understand it. This was the point in his life when he finally found what he truly wanted to do. Relaying this idea to his father though, was something he was a little worried to do, but they both worked it out and he began the search for somewhere to study. The extremely small school he’d attended in his youth had barely taught him anything and he wasn’t so sure that a university would take him in.

At age 18, he finally closed the boat business as his dad took a turn for the worst. Passing away peacefully in his sleep was something that Joshua had never imagined would happen at such a young age. The nurses in the hospital enquired about any other living relatives and Joshua concluded that he knew of none and his father had never mentioned anyone else. He'd never known about his mother, nor had his father mentioned her at all. This began the search for any relatives that might be living in other countries that he might live with until he had enough to move out himself. He knew it'd be rude to ask such a thing of people he'd only just met, but he concluded that this was his only choice.

The only lead he could find was an old branch of the family that had once lived in London, back in the 1800s. Joshua wasn't even sure that they were really his relatives but it sparked an idea that he might search the city and see if there were any documents there related to any of them. Little did he realise he'd be accepted into a university who'd happened to have clearing spaces just months after he'd moved, paving the way for his Geophysics career.

Six years later and Joshua, now living under the name Riley, was living in his very own apartment. He was still on the hunt for his family but for now he was content; that is, until a huge thunderstorm had struck the city and he'd found many objects floating around his room, or as he found out later to his dismay, floating around him.

Details of their powers:
The power of magnetism could be considered more of a hindrance that a gift. At such a low level of control, all Joshua finds is that he has the odd object starting to hang around him uninvited. He also finds himself owing whomever he visits a new electrical appliance after breaking them unexpectedly; he can't control when and where his powers work so he can't currently do anything about this. He seems to have acquired both an attractive and repulsive magnetic force, allowing for things to move around him, albeit he can't control their paths and it is limited to light objects, although he seems to have affected even non-magnetic materials, pulling at what little effects magnetism would normally have on them and amplifying it a little. At his full power though, he, theoretically would even take control of electromagnetism and create plasma allowing him to create an endless energy source. Of course, he still has a long way to go until then and he's probably too lazy to even try to reach that level.

The dowsing power is one he doesn't even realise he has, but it's a little odd that he always seems to know where things are. Even things in other peoples rooms. It possibly works by him subconsciously detecting the extremely weak magnetic fields of objects. He doesn't even intend to know where everything is by say, memorizing where things are put, but if he did know about this power, then he'd probably make better use of it than to constantly find his TV remote.

RP Sample:
    Click...clang.

Two Pepsi cans were flying around and hitting each other occasionally, before sticking back to the man sat watching TV. If he even moved slightly, just to change a channel perhaps, they'd be off again, doing another lap before settling back down, sticking to each other or the Kiwi. After this had been going on for around an hour, Joshua finally decided to take up one of the cans and finish it off, surprisingly no liquids had escaped onto the carpet much to his delight. Still, he'd rather of had both cans just stay stationary on the coffee table than have them weirdly zooming around.

He sighed before dropping the can back down on the floor, not being shocked when it took off again before it had even hit the floor. Standing up, he brushed the cans aside with his hand and they fell quickly to the ground; Joshua realised he'd disrupted some other objects as well, including a spoon, paper clips and some iron nails.

"Fine, fine. You just use my power so you can fly around the room, that's just fine." A quick thought of himself flying around the room ended when he decided this was too silly and he shook the idea out of his head.

"And now we have more on the Earthquakes hitting..." The TV wasn't even allowed to finish. It was either the loud explosion that made Joshua jump, or it was the thought of how much that TV had cost him that had all just gone to waste because of something he didn't ask for.

"Oh for crying out loud... It's okay, Riley, relax. There's definatly a positive to this, somehow. I just haven't found it yet..."

Another bang. This time from directly upstairs. Joshua was sure he'd heard swearing afterwards as well. He pressed his palm to his face and was rather upset that he'd be without a TV for longer than he thought, he'd possibly even miss the rugby world cup. He'd have to borrow someone else's TV, if it lasted long enough and didn't explode on him. He decided that it was best not to ask or even approach the resident directly above his own room.
