~Arthur Kirkland~

Arthur Kirkland Application 2kr9lg

Name: Arthur Kirkland
Age: 19
Birthday: 23 April
Country of Origin: UK
Floor in the building: 5th floor
How long they've lived in the building: 1 year
Job: University student, English Literature
Powers: Wings and water Control

Appearance: Arthur has soft, dark blond hair. It’s short, messy and thick, and people claim soft to touch. The same rules – messy and thick – also apply to his eyebrows, and mostly, they’re all people can stare at. Other than the eyebrows, he’s actually fairly attractive, he has emerald green eyes that have a quiet and muted intelligence to them. He tends to keep his mouth shut, his face pressed in to a scowl.

He’s fairly short for a boy, about 5”8, but he maintains that he could still grow, as men grow until 21. He’s somewhat skinny as well, though his shoulders are broad, so he looks less skinny then he really is. Arthur holds himself in a refined manner, coming from breeding. He likes to keep fit, he runs in the morning, but he doesn’t go to the gym very much, so he stays firm and in shape, but not muscly.

He wears very neat but casual clothes, often from designers on Regents Street. He wears neat, skinny jeans, often, being a bit of a hipster. He wears dress shirts normally, with waistcoats or t-shirts with scarves. When he’s working out, he wears a t shirt that’s about a size too big and tracksuit bottoms, to bed he tends only to wear a pair of boxer shorts, even in winter. He does have reading glasses, but he doesn’t wear them most of the time, only during classes and when he’s working.

Personality: Arthur is not the nicest of people. He’s kind enough, if you meet him in the lift and he deigns to talk to you. He’s also quite nice if you haven’t done anything to annoy him, however, it is so very easy to annoy him. The littlest thing can set him off, and then you’re blacklisted. But funnily enough, these blacklisted people are the people that he finds himself gravitating towards, they are his most trusted friends, often. If he insults someone, chances are, it’s because he cares about them.

He has trust issues, which is why he is known to insult those he loves. He was a little lonely growing up, and the person he was closest to – his nanny – was taken away from him when he got too old. He came from money, so he’s a bit stuck up and acts condescendingly towards the poor or uneducated. He’s stubborn and practices a particular form of cultural snobbery, particularly towards books, music and universities. He tends to judge people on how old their university is, or their taste in music and books. He is respectful of those whose opinion he agrees with, and dismissive or condescending of those who claim they don’t read. This makes people think that he’s a real jerk, unfortunately, he’s too thick to see it.

He’s a scatter brain as well. He loses almost everything at one point; he’ll just put it down and turn away for a moment then, when he turns back, he’ll find it’s gone. He’s been known to even loose shoes and as such, had to leave the house wearing odd ones every now and then. Arthur constantly loses his reading glasses and needs to have them replaced, but he tries his best to find them before that happens, because he hates writing home to ask for more money. He’s often been so forgetful as to forget to eat, especially when he’s busy. His cooking is so atrocious anyway that he doesn’t cook much to begin with, so even when he does eat, he eats the most abysmal and unhealthy things.

Arthur has a strong sense of pride. He’s not an idiot, he knows he can’t cook, but whenever he’s told that he’s a bad cook, he suddenly becomes defensive. They always over react in his mind, anyway, his food isn’t great and yes, things end up in flames a lot, but it’s edible… right? It’s the same with anything, when he knows that he’s in the wrong, he begins to panic and refuses to admit he’s wrong. He can even argue about maths when he’s proved to be wrong, eventually he’ll just storm off angrily, and that’s his way of ending the argument, he doesn’t like to apologise.

Likes:
  • Tea. Much more than coffee.
  • Books. His room is infested with them, they’re stacked in every free space, battered old paperbacks and leather bound books from the second hand book shop two streets away. Anything that catches his eye; fiction, non-fiction, books on science that he doesn’t understand, fantasy books, anything and everything.
  • Writing. Arthur loves to write stories and poetry. However, though people who’ve read it calls him talented, he hates to show people and try to get recognition. He prefers being a tormented anonymous writer. He finds it quite fun to play.
  • Arthur loves football (or soccer, if you’re a ‘philistine American’) and he enjoys playing it and screaming at the TV when there’s a match on. Outside of games, however, he makes sure not to be too much of a fanatic though. It’s unseemly.
  • Rain, or rather, complaining about the rain. There’s a near constant drizzle in England, or so it seems, and he enjoys complaining about how grey and dreary it gets.
  • Chips. He’s so conscious about his weight and making sure he’s healthy, then he ruins it all with fish and chips or a battered sausage.
  • He likes to drink and smoke, which, yet again, undermines his health. He tries not to smoke too much, just once a day, more if he’s stressed. He also likes to go to the pub and nurse a glass of scotch so he can pretend to be a depressed writer.
  • Embroidery. He loves to stitch things, and most of the throw pillows and quilts in his house have had patterns stitched in to them. The ones he doesn’t keep, he sells, usually in Berwald’s shop, or gives them as presents.

Dislikes:
  • Hamburgers. Arthur hates hamburgers, particularly from McDonalds. He calls them processed crap, but apparently, he hasn’t looked at the sausages he likes to eat recently.
  • Comic books or picture books. He likes illustrated books, but really, what’s the point of a story book that doesn’t have a prose story? It’s pointless. They’re alright for kids, but nobody over 10 should read them.
  • Photos. He hates having his picture taken and has been known to hit cameras out of people’s hands if they’re too persistent with their insistence to take his picture. He doesn’t mind taking pictures of other people, though. He’s not got a bad eye for photography.
  • Arthur hates it when people are rude to him, he gets offended very quickly. He tries his best to be a gentleman, but sometimes he says things without quite realising.
  • Scruffiness. Arthur hates it when he’s scruffy or other people are. Ties that aren’t done properly and shirts which are wrinkled or un-tucked are a pet peeve and he’ll berate people for wearing their clothes poorly. Nowadays, that seems like everyone.
  • Dirt. He doesn’t like dirt or insects, but he’s not a clean freak who washes his counters with disinfectant all the time. But he makes sure everything is clean and he keeps bug spray about the house.
  • Waste. He always makes sure everything lasts as long as possible, he was brought up on those wartime principles, 'waste not want not', and 'make do and mend'. But he does enjoy buying new clothes every now and then, it's a little luxury for him.

Any other information:
Arthur's family is relatively poor, compared to what their status is and what one would think to look at it. However, they do earn enough to pay for his university fees and lodgings, on top of what he has from student loans, so he lives comfortably. He's never actually had a job.

History: Arthur comes from a well-bred family, with titles and no money. He lived in a big house which was falling apart and frankly, no place for anyone to live. His father worked hard high up in a bank for them and his mother was a socialite, and they had a fair bit of money. However, a great deal of it went to the upkeep of the house. They refused to sell it; the land had been in their family since the 14th century.

Arthur was brought up in the newest wing of the house, where he spent most of his time with his nanny, a kindly young woman who was only about twenty when she was hired to look after him. She looked over him and he really cared for her, which is why he was very hurt when he got too old to need a nanny. He was sent to a very good private school, where he didn’t fit in very well.

He was shy at school, and preferred to go to the library and read rather than play with his peers, though he had a few friends. He still doesn’t trust people very much, he doesn’t want to be hurt as he was when his nanny left. He wasn’t as social as his parents would have liked, but he was smart and got good marks in his classes, being best in English of course. He was a little worse in maths and science, but with perseverance, he managed to get good marks in those as well.

He worked very hard and got in to one of the top universities in the UK; in London, where his parents lodged him in Gracefield house. Mostly, he stays to his rooms, but he will talk with the others if they force him to, and now they all have their powers to deal with, he’s a bit more sociable.

Details of their powers: Arthur has a pair of soft, white, downy wings. They are rather large, fully spread and longer than his arms. They’re very sensitive to touch and tend to twitch when he has them spread, sending feathers all over his apartment. At first, when he uses them, it breaks the skin, sending blood everywhere and leaving him with prominent scars on his back. There are little scars all over his back from where the bones in his wings spring from. Taking out his wings, he still ruins most shirts, so he’s cut slits in the back for the wings to burst from. There are marks on his back which are distinctly wing shaped. He makes sure to exercise them every day, as too little activity causes them to become painful and eventually atrophied.

His water powers are very weak. He can’t create water. At best, he can condense it from mist in the air, but he can only make small amounts at a time that way, he can also vaporize water in the same way. He can control water relatively well, but it’s harder to work against gravity, so pulling water up is difficult, moving it is easier.

RP Sample: Arthur had nearly slept through the storm. He would have slept through the flashes of blue light illuminating his room, the rain pelting the glass and the thunder roaring and rumbling overhead. What woke him up was the stabbing pain shooting through his shoulders. He shot up, and he hear a scream, looking around for the source until he realised it was coming from his own mouth.

What happened next was a blur of pain, thrashing in bed until he was tangled in the sheets, his back burning and like someone was clawing at his bones. When it was over, he was there, lying on his front, tasting blood on the sheets. He felt like crying, he didn’t know what was happening, feeling the soft warm glow in his body and a weight on his back.

When he managed to stand, he felt that same weight, pulling on the skin and the bones, and something moving behind him. He staggered to the bathroom in a blur of pain and threw up in to the toilet, tears streaming down his face. Finally, he mustered up the strength to look in the mirror, and didn’t believe in what he saw. Protruding from his back was two… wings, they were definitely wings, made of big white feathers. He screamed more, feeling pain as they flickered, somehow a part of him. No, no, how could this have happened.

Then, all of a sudden, in his shock, things became more insane – a pipe must have burst because water sprayed in to the bathroom from all the plumbing. After a few moments of horror, he ended up running, screaming, back to his bed, where he fell asleep from a deep exhaustion he hadn’t known before. By the next morning, he felt better, and there were no wings on his back. He was ready to dismiss it all as a dream, but there was blood everywhere , on the sheets and his pyjamas, which had torn terribly at the back (typical, the one instance he wears pyjamas, and he ruins them) and even on the walls, as if it had burst from him. Further inspection revealed no dampness in the bathroom, but no signs of a broken pipe anywhere. What had happened?
