Canada/Matthew Williams Application 16iie4m

Name:
Matthew Williams

Age:
18 (And a half!)

Birthday:
July 1st

Country of Origin:
Canada (Technically California, USA, but Matthew considers himself Canadian now)

Floor in the building:
Floor 1

How long they've lived in the building:
10 months

Job:
Student (University)

Powers:
Animation and Astral Projection

Appearance: > An artistic enterpretation <

Matthew is a very lean boy. He's tall and gangly, with legs and arms which look too long and thin for the rest of his body. His skin is very pale because of where he grew up, which matches his hair, a golden blond which shimmers in the sun. It also curls up so that it barely covers his neck, yet if you took a hair-straightener to it, it'd fall down to his shoulders. he has a roundish, heart-shaped face with such kind violet eyes. They're framed by thin glasses which make them look much larger than they really are, creating an innocent look. His lips are quite full and pink, his nose is tiny (and also, most of the time, pink). Around his forehead and cheeks, he never really managed to get rid of his acne completely, so his face is spotted with them here and there, though it wasn't nearly as bad as when he was younger. Moving downwards, his neck is long and thin, settling on thin, pointed shoulders. Matthew never managed to gain any muscle like Alfred did, so he doesn't have much shape to his limbs or torso. Instead he is quite boney, especially at his fingers and toes, all of which are remarkably long.

Matthew most likes to wear a combination of tee-shirt, hoodie, and jeans. He always wears tee-shirts underneath hoodies or sweaters, and they are always white. His hoodies vary, and he sometimes wears black, but his favourite hoodie is his red one, as red is his favourite colour. That's why that particular hoodie is frayed around the sleeves. He's had it for five years now and has only now grown into it. He had originally bought it a few sizes too large so that he could snuggle up in it like a blanket on those extra cold days. His jeans, he has a fair few, and mostly they're the usual blue denim, frayed-edged, loose jeans that he prefered. But a couple of them have rips in the knees, and hang loosely around his hips. He also has one pair of tight-fitting, grey jeans he only wears occasionally. He likes how they look, but they make him feel strangely body-conscious. But no matter which pair of jeans he wears, he always has his scuffed, worn-out sneakers. They're comfortable, despite the fact that the soles are peeling away from the toes, and the laces, once white, were almost black from dirt. They also did well to hide his old white socks with holes at the toes and thread-bare heals.

Personality:

Despite coming from one of the world's coldest countries, Matthew has the warmest of hearts. He is kind to everyone who needs kindness, and everyone who does not (so that makes it 'Everyone he can bring himself to talk to'). Despite that, he is shy. He had become somewhat of an introvert ever since he was separated from his brother, Alfred, who had always been the person who helped him feel confident. So now, over ten years later, he's still kept that shy nature, and finds it difficult to talk to people. Because of his lack of social skills, Matthew liked to make friends with his toys. He would talk to them and take them everywhere with him and have tea-parties like any normal child, and as he grew, he dropped this habit, but could never bring himself to let go of his favourite toy, a cute (and very old) polar bear with button eyes and a sewn on mouth. It was grubby from all of its years adventuring with Matthew, but he didn't care and loved it to bits, naming it Kumajirou. Now, at his current age, Matthew has a tendancy to chat to his bear when he feels lonely.

Matthew always liked the idea of having a hobby, and spends a lot of his free time trying out new hobbies. He tried art, but got only as far as sketching before giving up and moving on. He tried music and had a little success with the piano (with help from his long, spidery fingers), but much more success with the harmonica. However, the hobby he excelled the most in was skateboarding. In fact, he was pretty good at sports of any kind, but the one he was allowed to practice the most (and was one of the cheapest) was skateboarding, only needing his skateboard, a helmet, and some shoulder and elbow pads. Matthew loves skateboarding for the feeling of freedom and the wind blowing through his hair and oh it feels magnificent! And better yet, Matthew likes that he doesn't have to interract with anyone, it was a one-man sport. Matthew is clumsy, which luckily doens't affect his sporty side, and it only seems to be when he has two feet steadily on the ground that he has the ability to knock everything off its rightful place.

Matthew, as I've said before, is shy and quiet. But he does love to talk to people he's familiar with, especially his adored brother who he loves to recounting tales to whenever he finds the time. It can distract him from his hobby-searching. He would not, however, let it cut into his study time. Matthew takes his education seriously, and doesn't like thinking about what would happen if he didn't study enough and failed his classes and had to repeat, how shameful it would be! So Matthew takes the time to work hard for his grades, and accepting nothing lower than a B (Try as he might, sometimes an A just seems impossible). Studying IT (more specifically, Computer Programming), maths and a little bit of Business Studies on the side take a lot of time to understand and do.

Likes:

  • Eating. Mainly pancakes, but all fast food is good. And some healthy food too, maybe.
  • (Coincidentally) Cooking. The more he practices, the better he gets, the more fun it is (and with a more satisfying end result).
  • Sports. Mentioned previously, preferring skateboarding, but ice hockey is another particular favourite of his.
  • Video games. The reason he's taking the things he takes. He wants to create his own computer game some day.
  • Snow. It's familiar to him and reminds him of home.
  • Sun. It's different, a contrast!
  • Rain. Okay, he likes all weather, each one is fun to play in differently. (Except hail. Hail sucked.)
  • Music. Dancing to music is great too, Matthew loves the rhythm and wishes he could sing better.
  • Reading. He takes all kinds of books, not just classic literature or well-written plays.

Dislikes:

  • Dark places. No, Matthew is not afraid of the dark. Not any more, at any rate. But he still hates going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
  • Clowns. Probably relates to the first dislike. They're scary and Matthew feels the urge to run a mile when he encounters them (Which is luckily not often).
  • Spicy food. He likes his food mild, most of the time.
  • Being yelled at. Because more often than not, it means Matthew has done something he shouldn't have, and the yelling just makes the guilt worse.
  • Interviews. Matthew clams up and wishes his mother was there to do it for him and why oh why does he have to be independant?

Any other information: Other hobbies Matthew has tried out and dabbled in are woodwork, writing, choir singing, photography and knitting. Some where more disasterous than others.

History:

Matthew was born the first of two brothers in California. He was born a year before Alfred, though looking at them, you never would have guessed. Matthew was a little underweight for a baby, but he quickly grew out of that. He didn't have much puppy fat, having a naturally skinny figure. He took a lot after his mother, who was a slender and beautiful model, though you could see elements of his father in him, like his eyes. His father's eyes had the same warm smile that Matthew's do. When Matthew was born, his uncle Mathieu suggested jokingly that because they shared a birthday, he and the new child should share the same name. His mother, however, was not in the mood for jokes and growled out an agreement, but because having two people in the same family with the same name was confusing, 'Mathieu' became 'Matthew' because his mother refused to choose anything different. Matthew was happy growing up with his family, but that changed quickly (or it felt quick, after only six years) when his mother and father divorced. Matthew couldn't understand why at his age, but all he knew was that he wouldn't get to see his brother or daddy any more, nor would he see his house, or the street he played on, or anything. His mother took him to live in Ontario, Canada, and nothing Matthew said could ever change her mind.

He wrote to Alfred occasionally, but found less and less time to do so as he grew and his studies intensified. His school said he had a lot of potential in quite a few different departments, such as Maths and ICT, and Matthew latched onto this information and built up his knowledge in each area. He learnt of all sorts of different things to do with computer hardware and software, becoming quite the skilled little mechanic after some time. It was also around that time that he got really into video games, and he knew, just somehow knew, that he wanted to make a PC game. He just hoped that he had the ability, not to mention the time- it would take a very long length of time, and he'd have to find a team to help him if he was going to do anything with better graphics than an old arcade game and plot good enough to catch anyone's interest.

In his free time, he took trips around town just looking around and skateboarding through it, practicing tricks along railing and slopes and more often than not, returning home scratched and scraped. His mother had worried the first few times he'd come home in a bad state, thinking that he was being bullied, but Matthew assured her that he was safe, and if anyone was beating him up, it was his skateboard. That commect got the skateboard confiscated until Matthew had bought knee and elbow pads, along with a helmet, to be completely safe. Matthew had grumbled for the sake of grumbling, but he did agree with her. Safety was important. But not long after that, Matthew didn't really have time to use his skateboard any more because he needed to focus on his education. His mother suggested that he move to England to attend a well known university in London, but Matthew was worried about the idea of moving to a whole new country. He called up his uncle Mathieu, his favourite uncle, who apparently lived near this university. Mathieu was more than happy to take Matt in and, with only a little reluctance, Matthew moved in with him.

Details of their powers:

Astral Projection: Also known as Astral Travel, it is the ability to to leave a person's body in their 'Astral' form, or as some may think of it, his soul. His body falls into a coma-like state and he can move like a ghost through solid objects and people. No body can see him in his Astral form, nor can they hear him, but some will be able to sense him. It's easier to switch between the two bodies during night time when his solid body is asleep, or near to it. It's a dangerous power, Matthew fears that he wouldn't be able to get back into his body, or that he might slip into his Astral form by accident in a public place and scare people, or put his body in danger.

Animation: This is a safer power than the last, and it is the ability to make objects move as though they have a life of their own. Not unlike the characters in Beauty and the Beast, these characters can move around like they have bones and muscles and minds too. Matthew controls what they do, but sometimes they can get out of hand, wreaking havoc before Matthew can stop them. He can only animate solid or semi-solid objects, so liquids and gas are out of the question.

RP Sample: (From a Hogwarts AU RP)

Matthew was relaxing in a field with Alfred only a few weeks after school had ended for the year, chatting with him and catching up on his life, s othat they wouldn't feel so much like strangers. He was just listening to Alfred recounting one of his tales when two owls swooped down to greet them. One of the letters the owls were carrying was dropped right in Matthew's lap. He was surprised; surely they were for Alfred? He was the magical one. But he read the letter once, twice, then promptly started to cry. He was going to be a wizard? It had been his dream for a while, his very crushed dream. He didn't think it was true. It was far too good to be true. He was being asked to go to Scotland to a wizard school. A wizard school! In Britain!

He was finding it hard to believe, he had to confirm, just to make sure. After folding up the letter carefully, he started to compose his reply in his head, mumbling little sections through his sniffles and sobs. Dear Headmaster, I think you have me mistaken for somebody else. That was a good start. Matthew was ready to believe that it was meant to be addressed to Alfred, but Alfred seemed to have a letter of his own. Still, Matthew kept to his idea that there was some sort of horrible mix-up, and that he wasn't going to get his hopes up any more.

This was it. The train ride when smoothly, there were lots of people and a big lake in which Matthew spent the ride curled up in the middle of his boat in case he fell off. And now he was in line for the sorting hat put him into the correct house. There was only him and a couple other people around. Curse his surname, being ‘W’! It was making Matthew’s stomach do backflips with nerves, but he swallowed and waited for his name to be called in silence. When it finally was, he walked up, knees trembling, and sat down on the little stool which, to be honest, didn’t look like the most stable of things he could be sitting on, but it didn’t seem to be creaking under his weight, so Matthew relaxed slightly as the big hat was placed over his head.

”Ah, what have we here… A part of the Williams family. You know, your complete family was suited for Ravenclaw. Except for yourself and your half-brother. But I don’t think you should be heading in the direction of Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. Hmm… To me, you seem more like a Hufflepuff, yes. Although…”

Although? What although? There was no although! Hufflepuff, please, not Slytherin! Slytherin scared Matthew, he didn’t like how it sounded!

”Not Slytherin, you ask? Well then, Hufflepuff it is.” Matthew felt the hat lift off his head and looked over at the table of yellow where people clapped for him. Well, that was less painful as he’d thought it would be at least.
